Reciproco
- “Embedded intimately within our material histories and daily interactions, ceramics have persisted and endured through time. As a material that evokes a deep sense of sensory familiarity, Reciproco is a pair of interactive ceramic trinket trays designed to explore the senses of touch and skin. The work merges craft and innovation by integrating circuits within the ceramics, allowing a user’s warmth to be transferred from one piece to another upon touch. The surface glaze, formulated from glass waste, is enhanced with a thermal cue created using conductive paint. This subtly changes with increasing heat emanating from electricity pulsing through the ceramic bodies, heightening sensory engagement. By challenging the boundaries between communication devices and everyday objects, the work aims to bridge the emotional and physical gaps prevalent in our current digital communications.”
Reciproco was produced in collaboration with ceramicist Genevience Ang. It began as an experiment to combine our earlier work on ceramic circuits, with Gen’s ceramics making practice and deep research into alternative glaze materials. Reciproco went through multiple iterations of molds, clay forms, electronic design both on the clay bodies and off on printed circuits boards, and software code. It was showcased as part of the Future Impact 2 exhibition organized by Design Singapore Council and curated by Tony Chambers at Milan Design Week 2024 and Singapore Design Week 2024.
