About
The Interactive Materials Lab was established in 2021. We are part of the Division of Industrial Design at the National University of Singapore and are currently housed within the NUS CUTE Center.
We are a team of design researchers and technologists exploring materials and making approaches to support interactions between people and systems. Our work focuses on uncovering the potential of everyday materials and common making processes for new artifacts and systems.
Our research explores four interwoven themes: 1_designing interactive materials by transforming everyday materials into functional components for computing; 2_shifting the material culture of physical computing to expand accessibility and engagement beyond traditional electronics; 3_integrating design-based craft innovation to uncover new interactive possibilities within traditional making practices; and 4_advancing computational design and fabrication through rigorous hands-on experimentation.
Together, these approaches aim to broaden the material possibilities of interactive systems, foster new ways of engaging with computing, and open up opportunities for more creative, inclusive, and sustainable interactions between people and technology.
News & Updates
We will be presenting two papers at CHI 2025, led by first authors Han Bo and Ye Qian. We would love to connect with other researchers, especially if you are working in the area of making and materials.
Do reach out to say hi if you are going to be in Yokohama!
